Porque, amigos, d\u00e9jenme contarles un peque\u00f1o secreto: decir&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;estoy embarazado&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;no significa que est\u00e1s avergonzado&#8230; \u00a1sino que est\u00e1s&nbsp;<em>pregnant<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As\u00ed es. De alguna manera, en la mente de un estudiante de espa\u00f1ol, esas dos palabras parecen ser la respuesta perfecta para cualquier situaci\u00f3n inc\u00f3moda. Te caes en la calle, derramas caf\u00e9 sobre tu camisa en una reuni\u00f3n, o tropiezas con una silla frente a todos y, con valent\u00eda, exclamas: \u201c\u00a1Estoy embarazado!\u201d Y justo en ese momento, los hablantes nativos de espa\u00f1ol se congelan, te miran con una mezcla de sorpresa y confusi\u00f3n, pregunt\u00e1ndose si realmente acabas de anunciar tu embarazo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>El problema es que el parecido entre&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;embarrassed&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;(en ingl\u00e9s) y&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;embarazado&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;(en espa\u00f1ol) es un truco malicioso del destino. A simple vista, parecen tan cercanas que tu cerebro, sin pensarlo dos veces, hace la conexi\u00f3n err\u00f3nea. \u201cAh, claro, si &#8217;embarrassed&#8217; es avergonzado, entonces \u2018embarazado\u2019 debe ser lo mismo, \u00bfverdad?\u201d Pues no. Para nada. Lo que en realidad est\u00e1s diciendo es que est\u00e1s esperando un beb\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Y aqu\u00ed es donde la cosa se pone divertida. Imag\u00ednate que eres un estudiante de espa\u00f1ol en tus primeras semanas de clases, lleno de confianza, creyendo que ya dominas el idioma. Est\u00e1s en una situaci\u00f3n inc\u00f3moda, y piensas: \u201cEsta es mi oportunidad de brillar y usar mi nuevo vocabulario.\u201d Entonces, con una gran sonrisa y toda la seriedad del mundo, dices: \u201cDisculpa\u2026 estoy embarazado.\u201d Lo siguiente que sucede es un coro de risas, o incluso de felicitaciones confusas, si es que la gente a tu alrededor decide tomarte en serio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lo m\u00e1s ir\u00f3nico es que los estudiantes que cometen este error, m\u00e1s del 90% de las veces, son hombres. \u00a1Imag\u00ednate la sorpresa de anunciar un embarazo sin saberlo! Y si alguna vez ya has cometido este error, no te preocupes. Because, my friends, let me share a little secret: saying&nbsp;<strong>\u201cI\u2019m embarazado\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re embarrassed&#8230; it means you\u2019re&nbsp;<em>pregnant<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s right. Somehow, in the mind of a Spanish learner, these two little words seem like the perfect way to handle any awkward situation. You trip on the street, spill coffee on your shirt during a meeting, or bump into a chair in front of everyone, and proudly declare: \u201cI\u2019m embarazado!\u201d And right at that moment, native Spanish speakers freeze, staring at you in a mix of shock and confusion, wondering if you\u2019ve just announced a surprise pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue here is that&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;embarrassed&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;(in English) and&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;embarazado&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;(in Spanish) are a sneaky trick of linguistic fate. At first glance, they look so similar that your brain, without a second thought, makes the wrong connection. \u201cAh, of course!
