Welcome to our Deep Spanish practice series, a Spanish practice that engages students to read something more enticing than every day Spanish words<\/strong>. The purpose of this blog is to read and write in Spanish so that students taking Spanish classes<\/a> can practice reading something other than \u2018where is the library\u2019 or \u2018I like the blue pants\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not our intention to promote any political party or ideas related to a political viewpoint. If there is any overlap, it\u2019s because these ideas, like most ideas, can inspire agreement or disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diferencias culturales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He estado pensando en esto durante mucho tiempo y trato de mencionarlo cada vez que puedo para aprender de otras personas y escuchar sus perspectivas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiero hablar sobre las diferencias culturales<\/em> y por qu\u00e9 es tan importante tener conversaciones abiertas sobre ellas. A menudo, la gente parece inc\u00f3moda con el tema, como si la palabra diferente<\/em> fuera algo malo y debiera evitarse. Pero no estoy de acuerdo. Estoy 100% convencida de que s\u00ed<\/em> somos diferentes. Y oye, diferente<\/em> no significa mejor ni peor, solo significa diferente.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e9 que soy diferente, y tambi\u00e9n s\u00e9 que no soy la misma persona que lleg\u00f3 a EE.UU. hace 15 a\u00f1os. Ahora soy una ciudadana h\u00edbrida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ojal\u00e1 esto se ense\u00f1ara en las escuelas, para que cuando los ni\u00f1os escuchen a sus padres decir algo ignorante sobre los extranjeros, los inmigrantes o, en realidad, cualquier persona<\/em>, aprendan a pensar por s\u00ed mismos. No deber\u00edamos ser educados para ignorar las diferencias; deber\u00edamos aprender que est\u00e1 bien reconocerlas. Est\u00e1 bien preguntar sobre la cultura de alguien m\u00e1s. De hecho, es divertido comparar c\u00f3mo se hacen las cosas en un lugar y c\u00f3mo se hacen en otro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recuerdo cuando reci\u00e9n llegu\u00e9 aqu\u00ed y una cajera me pregunt\u00f3 si ten\u00eda planes para el fin de semana. Me qued\u00e9 en shock<\/em>. No pod\u00eda entender, por m\u00e1s que lo intentara, qu\u00e9 era lo que en realidad quer\u00eda saber de m\u00ed. En Argentina, especialmente en Buenos Aires, si alguien te pregunta qu\u00e9 vas a hacer en una fecha espec\u00edfica, lo primero que piensas es en cancelar tus planes y quedarte en casa, convencido de que est\u00e1n planeando entrar a robarte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estos son solo peque\u00f1os ejemplos de lo diferentes que pueden ser nuestras percepciones y expectativas seg\u00fan de d\u00f3nde venimos. Pero hay mucho<\/em> m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00ed que seamos conscientes de esto cuando interactuemos con los dem\u00e1s. Todos somos diferentes, y cuando venimos de distintas partes del mundo, las diferencias son a\u00fan mayores. Y s\u00e9 que algunos pueden estar pensando: Bueno, entonces qu\u00e9date en tu pa\u00eds.<\/em> Pero en realidad, \u00a1hay tanto que podemos aprender los unos de los otros! Y seamos sinceros: si nosotros<\/em> estamos aqu\u00ed, muchas veces es porque estamos haciendo algo que los locales no quieren hacer o no pueden hacer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recuerden, hablar sobre diferencias culturales no<\/em> es una falta de respeto. Preguntar para entender mejor a alguien no<\/em> es una falta de respeto. Pero rechazar o despreciar a alguien que ni siquiera conoces\u2026 eso<\/em> s\u00ed es una falta de respeto e ignorancia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural Differences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been thinking about cultural differences<\/em> for a while and try to bring it up whenever I can so I can learn from others and hear their perspectives about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to talk about cultural differences<\/em> and why it\u2019s so important to have open conversations about them. People often seem uncomfortable with the topic\u2014almost as if the word different<\/em> is wrong or negative and should be avoided. But I disagree. I am 100% convinced that we are<\/em> different. And hey, different doesn\u2019t mean better or worse\u2014it just means different.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know I\u2019m different, and I also know that I\u2019m not the same person who moved to the U.S. 15 years ago. I\u2019ve become a hybrid citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I wish this was taught in schools so that when kids hear their parents say something ignorant about foreigners, immigrants, or really anyone<\/em>, they learn to think for themselves. We shouldn\u2019t be taught to ignore differences\u2014we should be taught that it\u2019s okay to acknowledge them. It\u2019s okay to ask about someone else\u2019s culture. It\u2019s actually fun to compare the way things are done in one place versus another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember when I first moved here, and a cashier asked me if I had plans for the weekend. I was shocked<\/em>. I couldn\u2019t, for the life of me, figure out what she was \u0935\u093e\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0935 \u092e\u0947\u0902<\/em> trying to find out about me. In Argentina\u2014especially in Buenos Aires\u2014if someone randomly asks what you\u2019re doing on a specific date, you\u2019d be ready to cancel your plans and stay home, convinced they\u2019re planning to break into your house!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are just small examples of how different our perceptions and expectations can be based on where we come from. But there\u2019s so much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

So, let\u2019s be mindful of that when we interact with others. We\u2019re all different\u2014even more so when we come from different parts of the world. And I know some people might be thinking, Well then, stay where you belong.<\/em> But actually, there\u2019s so much to learn from each other! And let\u2019s be honest\u2014if we<\/em> are here, it\u2019s often because we\u2019re doing something that locals either don\u2019t want to do or can\u2019t do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, talking about cultural differences isn\u2019t rude. Asking questions to understand someone better isn\u2019t rude. But disliking someone you\u2019ve never even met? That<\/em> is both rude and ignorant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
